QUANTIFYING ‘GEOGRAPHIC PROXIMITY’: Experiences from the United Kingdom’s National Industrial Symbiosis Programme
نویسندگان
چکیده
Geographic proximity is said to be a key characteristic of the resource reuse and recycling practice known as industrial symbiosis. To date, however, proximity of symbiont companies has remained an abstract characteristic. By conducting a statistical analysis of synergies facilitated by the United Kingdom’s National Industrial Symbiosis Programme during their first five years of operation, this article attempts to quantify geographic proximity and in the process provide practitioners with an insight into the movement trends of different waste streams. Among other it was found that the median distance materials travelled within a symbiotic relationship is 20.4 miles. It is argued that quantitative information of this form is of practical value for the effective deployment of industrial symbiosis practitioners and wider resource efficiency planning. The results and discussion presented within this article are specific to industrial symbiosis opportunities facilitated within the United Kingdom; the methodology and assessment of resource movement influences are, however, expected to be relevant to all countries in which industrial activity is similarly mature and diversified. a Centre for Environmental Strategy, University of Surrey, Guildford, Surrey, GU2 7XH b NISP Yorkshire & Humber, 1-3 Bigby Street, Brigg, North Lincolnshire, DN20 8EJ c Civil Engineering, University of Surrey, Guildford, GU2 7XH d Link2Energy, 1-3 Bigby Street, Brigg, North Lincolnshire, DN20 8EJ * Corresponding author Email: [email protected] Paper originally published in: Resources, Conservation and Recycling 55(7): 703-712

‘Habitat’ Suitability Index Mapping for Industrial Symbiosis Planning
By 'working with the willing', the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) has successfully facilitated industrial symbiosis throughout the UK and, in the process, delivered significant economic and environmental benefits for both Programme members and the country as a whole. One of the keys to NISP's success is that, unlike failed attempts to plan and construct eco-industrial systems fr...

Background Nigeria accounts for a significant proportion of global maternal mortality figures with little progress made in curbing poor health indices. In a bid to reverse this trend, the Government of Nigeria initiated a conditional cash transfer (CCT) programme to encourage pregnant women utilize services at designated health facilities. This study aims to understand experiences of women who ...
متن کاملIndustrial Symbiosis for the Development of Biofuel Production
In recent years the popularity of biofuels has been transformed from a sustainable option for transportation to a questionable and criticized method. Many reports have therefore been produced to view biofuel production from a life cycle perspective; though results may be misleading. In a number of the reports, biofuel production is viewed in a linear manner, i.e. crops and energy in and biofuel...

متن کاملQuantifying economic and environmental benefits of co-located firms.
Resource sharing among co-located firms--referenced in the industrial ecology literature as "industrial symbiosis"--engages traditionally separate industries in a collective approach to business and environmental management involving the physical exchanges of materials, energy, water, and byproducts. While industrial symbiosis is seen hypothetically as a win-win situation, there are few analyse...
